Atlantic Hurricane Names 2026
Each year, the National Hurricane Center (NHC) assigns names to Atlantic hurricanes from a predetermined list.
These lists, maintained by the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), contain 21 names for each year, alternating between male and female names and following the alphabet, excluding the letters Q, U, X, Y, and Z.

Hurricane Scale
The Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale helps estimate property damage. Hurricanes can be life-threatening, but Category 3 and higher are major hurricanes that can cause catastrophic wind damage and loss of life.
All hurricanes can produce deadly storm surge, floods, and tornadoes, so it's important to take protective action, like evacuating from vulnerable areas.
